Coventry Cathedral
Of course the new and old Cathedral have played host to thousands of concerts and music events since the erection of the original church in the 14th Century. More recently, the cathedral ruins is the location of 'Ruins' DJ nights, and the University's Summer Ball. However, a lesser- known moment in history involves John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono.
The couple arrived in Coventry in June 1968 to submit a piece of art to the Cathedral sculpture exhibition. Their collection included a white wrought- iron seat surrounding two acorns which will eventually grow into an acorn tree. The piece of art was called ‘acorns for piece’, and acorns were even sent to schools throughout Coventry to continue the message. The reference is even made in ‘The ballad of John and Yoko’ with the lyrics ‘fifty acorns tied in a sack’.
Unfortunately, shortly after the exhibition the bench plaque was stolen, and the art pieced moved to a different location, as a result of this John Lennon sent drivers to pick up the bench. However, in 2005, Yoko Ono returned once more to the city to complete the work of art, returning the bench and plating new trees in its place. The two trees can still be seen in the grounds of Coventry Cathedral growing side by side, with a rich history behind them.
