The Old Apollo Theatre

The Coventry Theatre was a 2000- seat theatre constructed in 1937, originally under the name the ‘New Hippodrome’. It wasn’t until 1955 that is was renamed the Coventry Theatre, then later ‘The Coventry Apollo’ in 1979. For nearly 50 years the venue was alive with music, laughter and entertainment, hosting some of the biggest stars of the era. Including the Beatles, Rolling Stones and Cliff Richard.

Its closure began in 1985, with a final performance by Barbara Dickinson. It then became a Gala Bingo Hall. Before finally being demolished in 2002, much to the protest of the community and past performers. Ken Dodd claimed it as one of his favourites and said ‘what a beautiful theatre it was- it welcomed you with sounds of laughter and applause’.
